What I learned after two months in the PR world

March 3, 2025

Still unsure which industry to dive into for your career? Wondering if Public Relations could be the perfect fit? Before jumping into the world of PR, it's important to reflect on the key skills you'll need to master.

Just under two months ago, I walked into @Evoke's office filled with excitement and motivation but also with plenty of questions. I had no idea what the PR world would throw my way. However, in a short amount of time, I’ve grown tremendously. Here are the top takeaways I’ve learned so far:

#1: Develop a passion for writing.

In PR, writing is not just a thing, it’s everything. Whether you're crafting press releases, pitching journalists, or drafting social media posts, your writing skills will constantly be tested. It's not just about putting words together, it's about conveying your message clearly, engagingly, and in the appropriate tone for each situation. Every chance to write is an opportunity to refine your craft, so always seek feedback from colleagues and keep improving your skills.

#2: Master more than just your native language

In today’s globalized world, knowing just one language isn’t enough—especially in PR. While Dutch is crucial at Evoke, fluency in additional languages opens up international opportunities with new clients. Don’t just settle for the “bonjours” and “au revoirs”; immerse yourself in different languages and learn their nuances. A well-versed understanding of multiple languages can be a game-changer, strengthening relationships and expanding your reach.

#3: Stay ahead of current events.

The news landscape is always evolving, and every story could present a new PR opportunity for your client. Whether it’s a trending topic, a crisis, or a major development in their industry, staying informed and ready to act quickly is essential. This means regularly following the news, deeply understanding your client’s industry, and leveraging current events to create impactful PR moments that put your client in the spotlight.

PR is a dynamic and rewarding field, but it requires dedication, adaptability, and an eagerness to learn. Keep these skills in mind as you embark on your own journey!
